Why these months?
Two things decide your odds in Kiruna: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright midnight-sun months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why September and October and February and March tend to edge out the dead of winter. Kiruna's season runs late september to late march.
Kiruna is Sweden's northernmost city and home to the original ICEHOTEL at nearby Jukkasjärvi. It's the transport hub for the whole Swedish Lapland aurora region, including Abisko an hour west.
Where to stand in Kiruna
Skies over Kiruna are decent, but the move is to drive west toward Abisko's blue hole if the local forecast is cloudy. The ICEHOTEL grounds at Jukkasjärvi are a classic base.
